Life on Loan How to get out of debt?
People take out loans for everything – cars, education, flats and so on. The desire for living better right now and not in some 5 years.
To your mind, is it possible to live in Russia without any loans?
I think it’s quite obvious. Well, to pay in your future for living now like you want is to go and take out a loan at the rate of 70% p.a.
. The price to pay is high, because in the future you’ll slave away as hell, weasel out of collectors and so on.
Listen, one must not pay in their future for such present. Create your future brick by brick, go up the steps toward your future, do not leap.
Otherwise you’ll get into such bullshit where all your future will be, you’ll ask yourself “What the hell do I need all this for?” Well, it is you who did that.
That’s why when somebody wonders how to live without loans… Well, guys, it’s okay to live with loans if you take out a loan at 15% p.a
and not at 70% – if we take all these front-end fees, charges for this and that and sum everything up, it will be 70% p.a. At the same time, it is an instrument,
and if you know how to use it and you use it carefully, taking into account some restrictions, it is a useful instrument for some operations.
The only question is who masters it, how and where. And here everything is clear – nobody learns it anywhere, and, as a result,
people take out loans randomly and put themselves in a sticky situation. So, if you don’t want to learn how to use this instrument, it’s better not to use it at all.
How can a sensible person, who watches his/her money, pay the effective rate of 70% p.a.? How?
Here we have the following lifehack. In general, loan rates, or these interest rates, will go down in the long run, that’s why smart people who can use it,
who learn to use it and so on, take out a loan, for example, they took out, say, a mortgage at 14%, then they refinanced it to 9%,
tomorrow they’ll refinance it to some 6%, so each two or three years they refinance it in another bank at dropping rates.
Wait, you took out a loan yourself, and it was not just a small loan but 200 thousand dollars at 10% not p.a. but per month! Was it your accurate estimation or a risk and you went for broke?
Well, we had little working capital, some 20-30 thousand dollars, while we needed 200 thousand dollars to buy two vans of glass fiber to produce an adequate lot of goods.
That’s why we were looking for 200 thousand dollars of external financing – to borrow them, to take out a loan, anything.
We turned to all banks – nobody loaned out, there were no securities – we turned to all family friends and finally met two natural persons.
Were they gangsters?
No, these were big men, roofers, well, they had already earned their fortune and became not just entrepreneurs but investors – they invested in some super-profitable projects.
Those rich roofers accommodated us with a loan at a good interest rate – 10 or 10-plus % per month.
Again, it was not a bank but natural persons, they thoroughly selected the project, thoroughly selected the team, we were inspected, examined, and that’s actually why we were given that money.
That time we just thought over and estimated everything, we were not those heroes who stick their neck out and go through fire and ice.
That time we didn’t know that no matter how accurate the estimates are, in complex and rapidly changing systems all these estimates are a bullshit, because if something – 1, 2 or 3
elements – changes, it changes everything. That’s why we couldn’t expect that a tough contract with the plant that produced our roofing materials would be cancelled,
though it was a tough contract with punitive damages. We missed one thing – though we had that tough contract and punitive damages,
if they broke the contract, we would not live till the moment when we could levy a penalty against them. We would not live till that time, while they would outlive it.
That’s why they said: “Guys, we’re going to break the contract, sue us if you wish.” They did understand that we would not live out even three months,
while all these legal proceedings take much longer. When we realized that the plant withheld the production,
the first thing we did was announce that we were going to collect prepayment from our customers, and those who would prepay, would get a discount.
Of course, a normal reaction when you’re turned down is that you start cowering and shutting in.
We did the opposite – we faced it and, having received the pre-payment from our clients, we payed back 20% of the principal of the loan in three weeks.
There are always some gaps, and these are not gaps in calculations but in the fact that circumstances turn on a dime, that’s why when people build their plans,
projects and so on, in fact there are two options: either it will be big repawning, but in this case you limit the range of actions,
one can repawn so largely that the biggest repawning will mean doing nothing at all and having zero-risk.
Or the second option – if you do something, do that damn quickly so that the circumstances that surround you do not have time to change a lot.
That means you must find and snatch a period when, even if they start changing, you’ll have time to pull off your deal.
Unfortunately, there are no other options, especially when you are just at the start and so on. Or may be fortunately. It is important, if your plan failed, to put your plan B or C into action,
that is, to keep in mind the idea of replanning. A plan is nothing, while planning is everything.
Igor, do you think there is anything that is worth taking out a loan?
Of course there is! Oh damn, there are only few things, but I can tell you at least about one. Look, a simple situation: you work, well, or someone else, there a lot of people who work and get some 70 thousand rubles.
Well, I’ll take the Moscow market, because in some cities 70 thousand rubles are a good salary, while in Moscow 70 thousand rubles are not that much.
For example, to get a loan of 300 thousand rubles for studying at HackerU or some schools and mastering professions like ethical hacker, pentester or other modern professions,
for which the market suffers shortage of HR, shortage of specialists, so that upon completion of the course you get employed with a salary of 120 or 150 thousand rubles.
Now look at these simple calculations – in 8 or 9 months, you start working at your new place for 120 or 150 thousand. The difference between 70 and 150 is… 80
Yep, 80 thousand. You took out a loan of 300 thousand, and now you have extra 80 thousand in your salary. As a result, you took out a loan, did a study course, added 80
thousand to your salary, so it will take only 5 months at the new job to repay your loan in full. Do you see what a small period it is?
There are some professions that are highly in-demand, but if you are able, if you’re cool, go and do that. Taking out a loan for such a thing is a holy cause.
Well, for education. But God save you all from doing this for studies at university, MBA, business education, you don’t need it, or MSU
and so on, don’t! It’s about mastering a profession, a specific profession, when you do a course and become an in-demand specialist for a specific corporation and for a certain salary.
And here you make these simple calculations on how many months you will need at the new place to repay your loan, and if these are 6 or 8 months – not more – some 6 or 8 months, it is a profitable deal.
Well, and what should people, who already took out both a mortgage and some five loans, do? They are already in this deadlock.
Speaking seriously, I’ve already mentioned that. Now interest rates are being lowered, and banks are in competition with each other in offering refinancing of the pool of loans, which people took out,
at a reduced rate of interest. It is a very practical means and a lot of people already apply it. If a person collected unsecured personal loans, here personal bankruptcy may be an option
– you won’t have to escape, you won’t have to answer collectors’ calls – they will keep calling you anyway – and so on; if you experience that and realize what a shit you are in and you need a kind of reload, you need to undergo this purification.
It is a procedure of personal bankruptcy. Indeed, it is not that pleasant – well, when you visit the urologist, are you pleased, after all? It’s also a bit unpleasant, but, on the other hand, do you really want to wait until it stalls?
If we have two unpleasant things, let’s choose the least unpleasant and do it rather than a greater trouble will happen.
Well, these are some very practical insights from, say, an experienced person, entrepreneur who succeeds in life. And for those who would like to cleanse their karma
Everyone can find three days for that. No arguments, no bad thoughts, that’s it.
All people are good. When this stage is over, do the same thing for a month. The same idea – all people are good, no arguments with anyone and so on.
When this stage is over too, do the same thing for three months, and then see how your life will change.
But this technique is for full stabilization, for passing to a new way of thinking, because we are often liable to manipulations of the same banks
which trick us out with these loans by saying “look, take out a loan and you’ll have a flat or a car”, well, less bad if these are banks, —
but there also some financial dealers, how are they called? Microlenders. These guys really shove down throat. So, in order not to react on that and
not to let this external stuff and this bustle pass inside you easily, to have such a protective shield, to build this protective shield around you, you need to accept this attitude.
To sit in silence is sometimes more important than to scroll your or Facebook news feed or to listen to how your neighbor is doing, or to look at how other people live and
dream of living like they do. Until a person builds this protective shield around him/her, a saving cocoon that all people are good, everyone does their job, and I do mine and will live this way, I’m good too.
